2013 Summer Advisers Workshops
Join CMA vets and media experts in Washington, D.C., for a crash course for new advisers or in multimedia training or the First Amendment.
Our Summer Advisers Workshops, July 25-28 at the Embassy Suites, have three tracks, outlined below. In addition, each includes an afternoon at the Newseum.
New Advisers Workshop
Collegiate-media advising is a unique niche. Your colleagues are at other institutions across the country, not in the same newsroom or down the hall. Part of CMA’s core mission is to train to new advisers. In this workshop, we’ll do just that by discussing the role of the adviser and its challenges; how to manage, recruit, train and motivate millenials; what you need to know about technology, media law, ethics, campus relationships and the business side of our business; and your place with content, controversial and otherwise.
Hands-On Multimedia Workshop
Want to practice what you preach in a web-first newsroom? And how to teach your staffs to do just that?
Jim Hayes, CMA’s broadcast and technology director, will teach you how to create a short video story.
You’ll plan, shoot, import, cut, edit and export your video. (And explore D.C. from behind the camera.) You’ll also write companion text, post your content to Vimeo and embed your projects on a custom-built Wordpress site. As time permits, you’ll also receive detailed instruction on additional multimedia topics, like CMS choices, video and audio hosts, software and more.
First Amendment Institute
It’s at the core of everything we do. Join us to get a refresher course on why the First Amendment is vital and renew your commitment to supporting it: in theory, in your media org and on your campus.
Topics will include the state of the First Amendment; why it's so important to educate your communities about it (and how to do so); religious freedom; students rights to free expression at both public and private institutions and the legal issues and court cases that impact it; and how to create and market creative First Amendment events, in and out of your classroom and campus.
